Description

more
This data set resides as a polygon data layer within the Natural Resources Values Information System (NRVIS). The seed zones were developed to ensure that the variation of climatic parameters (e.g. growing season length) within each zone corresponds with the adaptive variation exhibited by major commercial tree species in the province. Seed zones were derived using the Ontario Climate Model, which helped to balance climatic variability and risk within each zone. The seed zones were then made operational by drawing boundaries to coincide with nearby geographic or administrative boundaries. The Ontario Climate Model uses specialized Geographic Information System (GIS) software and expertise developed by the Australian National University. The model couples climatic data from 400 weather stations across Ontario with a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) to generate and map climatic surfaces for parameters such as precipitation during the growing season and growing season length. Overlays of these surfaces permitted the development of homogeneous climate zones for areas of the province where the climatic regime is more similar than surrounding areas.
